We are already part way through the summer holidays and by now I’m sure the children are getting as edgy as the adults.
With the hot weather looking like it’s here to stay, now’s the time to make the most of a staycation in London
Experience a city farm
There are plenty of city farms for the whole family to enjoy – and they don’t need to cost the earth.
Children and parents can enjoy seeing a touch of the countryside in the heart of London. Discover a huge variety of animals, from the domestic to the unusual. Cows and sheep, guinea pigs and llamas – large or small, it’s a great day out for animal lovers.
Many of the city zoos also offer additional activities. Try horse riding or the chance to feed the animals. Some of our favourites include the Vauxhall City Farm which has been running for the past 35 years and has more than 100 animals, and Freightliners Farm, hidden away on Holloway Road.
Newham City Farm has a shire horse and barn owl amongst their selection of animals. It’s a wonderful way for children in the city to learn a bit more about the natural world.
Discover London’s museums
Despite their sometimes stuffy image, London is brimming with exciting museums, with wonderful displays and interactive exhibits. Families and tourists alike enjoy a day out discovering history or the natural world in a fun and engaging way.
From the Natural History Museum (the Blue Whale is a firm favourite), to the Science Museum (so many buttons to press) and the London Transport Museum, it’s worth giving them a try – but a top tip is to leave early to avoid the crowds and don’t forget a packed lunch to keep costs down.
Enjoy the magic of the theatre
The theatre scene in central London has never had a stronger game, so this summer make sure you grab some tickets and help your children to enjoy the magic of the stage at its best.
Shows to look out for include Matilda (a Roald Dahl classic converted to stage thanks to comedian Tim Minchen), The Tiger Who Came To Tea, Monstersaurus, Gangsta Granny and Mr Stink. Your children are sure to leave with amazing memories they will cherish for years to come.
Go on an adventure
If the sun is shining and money is tight, there are plenty of other things to do within London that you, and your children, are sure to love.
Explore the adventure parks dotted around, from the Diana Princess of Wales’ Memorial Playground which has a fantastic pirate ship, to Clissold Park in Highbury with its table tennis tables, basketball courts and a paddling pool, to Highbury Fields and its circular train – there is plenty to do and see.
Prepare in advance with your suncream, a packed lunch and water, and comfortable shoes – and above all, have fun.
