What should you do with unwanted furniture?

May 16, 2022 |

Just bought new furniture for your home? Exciting times, but if you are like many of us you now have to figure out what you are going to do with your old furniture. Buying large furniture means that you can’t just put your old stuff in the bin. You can’t leave it out the front of your home either like you see some doing as it’s illegal to do so and you can get a big fine for it.

So what can you do with your unwanted furniture?

Today we will be looking at some of the things you can do with your unwanted furniture to give it a new lease of life.

Selling your unwanted furniture

You can sell your unwanted furniture to make room for your new furniture. You can sell your furniture in boot sales for a small fee or you can list it on an online marketplace such as Facebook and have an item sell the exact same day.

Facebook marketplace is a great way of selling your items as you can sell them locally without a fee. Compare this to an online marketplace such as eBay which takes a fee and you also have to sort out delivery too.

Money Saving Expert have an excellent guide to selling on Facebook Marketplace which can be seen here.

Donate your furniture

If you can’t sell your furniture but still need to get rid of it then donating your furniture is an excellent choice. Not only does donating your furniture give your furniture an extended lease of life but it also gives someone the chance to own beautiful furniture which they may not have had the chance to otherwise.

Donating your furniture however isn’t as simple as it should be. In our experience charity shops can be very picky with items that they will accept and even taking the items to the shop is made more complicated than it should be. To see if you have items a charity shop would be interested in you should visit them first and talk to them about the items they would accept. From here you can then book a time slot to drop off your items at the shop.

Donating to charity through your old items is a great way of giving back, but personal experience has shown me that the whole process can be frustrating. If you don’t have time to do all of the above then donating your furniture may not be the perfect choice for you.

Put your furniture into storage

If you don’t necessarily want to throw your furniture out or sell it then another great option is to rent a storage unit. Self-storage is far more affordable these days and storing your unwanted furniture is common.

You never know, maybe a family member moves home and they need additional furniture but don’t have the budget to do so, you can then lend or donate this furniture to them. A benefit of storing your furniture is that interior design trends change and what is or isn’t in fashion now will be at some point in the future. Having a place to store your furniture so you can keep up with the latest interior designs is practical and more cost-efficient than replacing your furniture every few years.

Recycle your old furniture

If none of the above options can work for you then you could go to your local recycling plant to see if your furniture can be recycled. Recycling your furniture is a responsible way of getting rid of items that you may not need anymore.

Contact your local council to dispose of your furniture

If you want to get rid of your old furniture before your new furniture arrives and don’t have the time for any of the above then the best option for you is to contact your local council and have them come and pick your furniture up. Your council will pick up and dispose of your larger waste items for a fee.

Some councils will give you a deal on disposing of multiple furniture pieces too so if you do have a few different items be sure to see what options are available to you.

Conclusion

Getting new items in your home whether that be new TV, wardrobe, bed, settee or even gym equipment can be an exciting time for all involved but you soon realise your home has no space and you have to dispose of your old furniture.
